Hölscher Projects

Stuttgart 21

As part of the construction activities for Stuttgart 21, Hölscher was responsible for the entire groundwater management of the large-scale project. Groundwater was extracted and transported via a pipeline system to the treatment plants where it was purified. To support the deeper natural mineral water sources, a large portion of the treated groundwater was reinfiltrated near the excavation sites.

Sustainable groundwater management was achieved through intelligent control and reinfiltration.

To support the deeper natural mineral water sources, a large portion of the treated groundwater was reinfiltrated near the excavation sites. Excess groundwater was discharged into the Neckar River. The entire groundwater management system is continuously monitored and automatically controlled. All collected data was monitored via a remote data transmission system.

Services and technologies used

Water treatment plants

Hölscher operates one central and two additional water treatment plants. These plants are crucial for purifying the extracted groundwater before it is reinfiltrated near the excavation areas.

Control centre

In addition to the water treatment plants, Hölscher operates a central control centre for the Stuttgart 21 project. This control centre handles visualisation, process control, and data processing to efficiently monitor and manage the entire dewatering process. All collected data is continuously monitored and adjusted via a remote data transmission system. This ensures the entire dewatering process is controlled accurately and in real time.

Bottom filter wells

Hölscher constructed 22 bottom filter wells to extract and filter groundwater. These wells play a key role in managing the groundwater balance during construction.

Pipeline system

As part of the Stuttgart 21 project, Hölscher installed an extensive system totalling 23 kilometres of pipelines. These pipelines were used to transport extracted groundwater to the treatment plants before being reinfiltrated near the excavation sites.

Infiltration wells

During the construction for Stuttgart 21, Hölscher built 68 infiltration wells. Re-infiltration supports the deeper natural mineral water sources, ensuring their stability and maintaining water neutrality.
